Disney Tips:
From Fellow Readers

Our readers deliver a wealth of information! Send us your tips! You may see them in this newsletter and win a copy of PassPorter! And you never know -- your tip could even appear in a future edition of a PassPorter guidebook.

HAPPY FILL-IN-THE-BLANK!
'Following on from a tip given this week about getting the characters to sign Christmas cards instead of autograph books, I did this for my sister recently, who had just passed her driving test!  I got Mickey to sign a 'congratulations on passing your test' card before she had even taken it, I was that confident she would pass!  This could be extended to any kind of card - birthday, anniversary, etc, although obviously only for those family and friends who would appreciate a Disney card!' (Editor's Note: One of the best cards I ever received was when we bought our first home and a friend sent me a Cinderella's Castle card signed by as many characters as she could find! I still have it and treasure it.)
-- contributed by Carolyn B.

CRUISING FOR CHARACTERS
'When on a Disney Cruise, arrive at character greetings up to half an hour early because the lines get pretty long, and bring something for the kids to do while waiting in line.'
--contributed by Kara W.

EAT EARLY
'Most families with young children choose to spend their first day enjoying the magic of the Magic Kingdom. Our family has made it yearly tradition to begin our adventure with a character breakfast at The Crystal Palace. We book our breakfast for 8:00am! Yes it's early especially when you take into consideration the time it takes to travel from your on-site hotel (is there any other way to do Disney?). However the advantage to arriving before the park opens truly makes for the most magical of memories. When you are standing on Main Street USA with just the Disney Cast Members you truly get to enjoy how spectacular this magical place is! The turn-of-the-century style architecture and the absolute attention to every detail is so apparent in everything they do! On my very first trip to Disney World 5 years ago we planned our first morning this way and I actually had tears in my eyes. The other advantages to this early morning breakfast on your first day are the fact that the kids (and grown ups) are on such an adrenaline rush no one minds getting up extra early. Lastly you get to enjoy a few of your favorite rides before the park fills with thousands of eager Mousketeers!'

Captain's Corner:
Treasure Hunting Game

Play our fun and quirky treasure hunting game, hosted by Captain Jack Skatt from our book, 'PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World.' The Captain makes a study of the delightful details -- sometimes hidden, sometimes in plain sight but often overlooked -- at Walt Disney World and aboard the Disney Cruise Line. Using notes from his journals, he will lead you to this 'treasure' at Disney with clues, questions, photos, or riddles. Your challenge is to discover the answer by searching your memory, visiting Disney, or even just looking really hard on the Internet. If you think you've found the answer, e-mail it to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the first person to correctly submit the FULL answer will receive a free PassPorter enamel pin. (Please note: Players can win once every three months.)

Here is this week's journal entry:

'While I was walking my lady love Leota home last night, we dawdled a bit near the Liberty Bell. I happened to glance down at the little plaque below it and was interested to read that the bell in Liberty Square was cast from the same mold as the original bell that hangs in Philadelphia. I was surprised at WHEN it was cast, however -- I had no idea it was cast so recently!'

What year was the Liberty Bell in Liberty Square cast?

For bonus credit, locate the photographic evidence in the PassPorter Photo Archive and post a comment with the photo!

Congratulations to vtsgirl2 who was the winner of last week's trivia contest! vtsgirl1 was the first person to identify the location of the unusual sculpture of Mickey Mouse as behind Disney's Contemporary Resort. Bonus credit also goes to vtsgirl1 as the first person to locate the photo in our PassPorter Photo Archive. To view the original clue, see last week's newsletter.

Send your full answer to jackskatt@passporter.com -- the winner will be notified by e-mail and announced in a future newsletter, along with the correct answer!

Q and A: With Jennifer and Dave

laurak asks: '
I am wondering what the average adult drink price is on the Wonder? We are not big drinkers, but we do like to have a drink once in while.'

Dave answers: '
Expect glasses of wine at dinner to run from $6 on up to $15 or more, depending on the wine, of course. Typical mixed drinks are in that $4 - $6 range, but there are a few premium liquors (like XO cognac) that may run up to $9 or so (still not a bad deal if you're familiar with what they cost elsewhere). Overall, I'd rate beer and mixed drink prices 'moderate' at worst. Wine prices tend to be average restaurant pricing (a touch higher than 'moderate,' and typically double the price you'd pay at a wine shop).'

      Travel Feature:

New York City: Something Old, Something New
    Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist

There are some cities in the world that are on most people's lists to visit at some point in their lives – London, Paris, and New York are just a few that spring to mind. But let's be honest, one visit is never going to be enough to see everything that these sprawling metropolises have to offer. It's a bit like going to Walt Disney World – there'll always be more to see and that's why going back to New York was an obvious choice.

It was my fourth visit in the last 20 years and my first since our honeymoon trip of 1999. That's a long time to be away from any city and, as you'd expect, New York had changed a lot during that time. I suspect much of that is due to the world changing and tragic events of September 11, 2001 and it's something none of us should ever forget. Bearing that in mind, I knew one of the places we had to visit was Ground Zero.

Standing there, watching everyone bustle through the nearby subway station, it was hard to picture in my mind the Twin Towers that we had visited nine years ago for the superb views it had offered of the city. I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness and I just wished that we had been able to spend more time in New York so that we could've visited the Ground Zero Museum Workshop but with the little time we had, it wasn't an option on this trip. It's somewhere that is certainly worth seeing and gave us an opportunity to remember all those who lost their lives on that terrible day.

Of course, the events of that day understandably changed a lot of other things in New York and one of those was the Statue of Liberty. No longer can you climb to the top, so knowing that, we chose to stay on the ferry that takes you out there and instead opted to visit Ellis Island. I didn't realize, until a friend told me just before our visit, that this had undergone a renovation in recent years and that perhaps explains why I didn't remember much of it from my last visit there more than a decade earlier.

This is perhaps one of the best places to start any visit to New York, as it really puts the city's development in a good context, taking you through the frantic years from 1892 to 1954, when more than 12 million immigrants entered the country that they hoped would become their home. Audio guides take you back in time and really bring the island's history to life through the use of people's first hand experiences. Facts that stuck with me were the doctors only having an average of six seconds to check each immigrant's health and some of the tests to check their intelligence levels were fascinating – and also frightening – to see! I'm not sure I could have passed some of those, particularly when you think of the weight on their shoulders, knowing that incorrect answers could dash their hopes of a new life. It's a truly fascinating place and one that's well worth seeing.

Something else that struck us that had changed over the years was the whole feel of the city. It felt much more welcoming now than perhaps it had previously. We were amused to see a man and a woman both hailing a cab and the man offering it to the woman – not a sight that I'd certainly ever witnessed on any of my previous visits to the city.

The last time we were here, New York City was a lot safer than it had been in the bad old days gone by, but even so, you were still wary traveling on the subway. That was something that also seems to have changed. I felt as safe down there as I have on any other underground train system in the world, which was a pleasant surprise to me.

Some things hadn't changed of course. Times Square was still just as frenetic as the last time we were there, with the massive billboards all around, advertising everything under the sun and the news tickers telling you all the latest updates from around the world. Macy's still remains the place to go and shop anywhere in the world. That place never ceases to amaze me every time I visit it. Yes, I know it's the world's largest store, but somehow I just don't believe it – until I get inside and then the scale of it is overwhelming!

Something else that was overwhelming was the view from the Top of the Rock, the brilliantly named observation deck at the Rockefeller Center. Having already visited the Empire State Building and, knowing that we were short on time, we opted this time for a different aerial view of New York City, not sure whether it would be as good. If anything, it was better. One obvious thing you can see from up there is the Empire State Building itself, but you also get some superb views of Central Park, the green oasis in the middle of prime city real estate. It's really only from up there that you can appreciate just how much land this takes up and why it's so close to New Yorkers' hearts.

It's a shame we didn't have more time to spend in New York this trip, but I have no doubt we will be back. It is, after all, one of the world's greatest cities to visit and it's somewhere that you can always return to and see new sights and wonders.

    Disney Feature:

Disney Cruise Line Member Cruise: A DVC Member's Report
    Sue Kulick, PassPorter Featured Columnist

Each September, Disney Vacation Club (DVC) puts on a special event for their members: The DVC Member Cruise!

As soon as you enter the Disney Cruise Line terminal, you become instantly aware that you are in for something special. The terminal is decked out with subtle (and not so subtle) welcomes for DVC members. All the Cast Members have special shirts on that are embroidered with the theme of the cruise. This year it was Disney Inspirations. Signs and banners welcome members to the cruise, a pirate band plays, and Captain Mickey welcomes cruisers home. And DeeVee See, the First Lady of Disney Vacation Club, is there to meet and greet cruisers.

Soon, you're boarding group is called and you are ready to board. The gangway is lined with more DVC Member cruise signs, and then you are swept onto the ship! You walk to the entry, where a Cast Member not only announces you, but welcomes you home!

The Atrium Lobby is filled with more DVC touches, from banners to a three-foot high and eight-foot long ice sculpture declaring "Welcome Home, DVC Members!" You will also hear "Welcome Home" from most of the cruise staff, from your servers and stateroom hosts all the way up to the Captain.

And the ship! The beautiful Disney Wonder is a glorious ship in and of herself, but decked out in DVC finery, she absolutely sparkles. The pictures on the wall have been replaced by pictures of Disney history. The posters leading to the night club area, Route 66, have been infused with subtle DVC touches. DVC Member banners flap everywhere in the breeze.

Many DVC cruisers are repeat DCL cruisers, so chances are there will be a Castaway Club gift in your stateroom when you arrive. But wait…there will also be a DVC member gift! Our first day we received two suitcases filled with tools to inspire our imagination. There were DVC cruise-only pins. There were snow globes, picture frames, CDs, and much, much more. You will need another suitcase just to carry it all home.

At the sail-away party we began to get a taste of just how special this cruise is going to be. We were welcomed home by DVC president Jim Lewis. He revealed the wonders that awaited us! This year, the inspirations came from the world of sports, entertainment, animation, and of course, Imagineering. Some of the speakers and performers included Ducky Williams, Floyd Norman, Linda Cohn, Tony Baxter, and Kissy Simmons. The horns played that beautiful song, and we were on our way!

You can start out any cruise with a Bahama Mama, but why not try an "Inspiration Sensation," or a "Vacation Club Cooler?" As Port Canaveral recedes into the distance, you get ready for the time of your life!

Of course, there is the traditional DVC presentation, called "Vacation Inspirations," where you can find out about the latest DVC deals. However, unlike DVC presentations on other Disney cruises, this one has some pretty serious incentives and prizes. In the past, I have won a towel and a tote bag. Don't get me wrong, I love both of them, but this time they were giving away spa treatments, wine packages, shore excursions, and to one lucky winner, an Interval International exchange vacation! Plus, the incentives to add on points on the cruise were wonderful. Any add-on of over 120 points netted you a free vacation, from 4 days up to a free Adventure by Disney depending on how many points you added on.

But by far, the most compelling feeling on a DVC cruise is the member camaraderie. You are sailing with 2500 other DVC members, all of whom already know the magic of DVC ownership and are there because they love DVC as much as you do! The dinner conversation is interesting and lively, and everyone is so incredibly nice. Since the common bond is DVC, you are never short of conversation and never without the ability to make a friend.

DVC opens up their cruises for the following year in early to mid November. All DVC members receive a mailing that tells them the dates of the next cruise, and when they can call in. It's usually a short window, and they do sell out quickly. You need to be patient and be ready to hit redial over and over. And when you do get through, you will still have a wait. You can pay cash if you don't have enough points, but you need to be a DVC member to book this cruise. And another perk that DVC throws in; your gratuities are included!

As a DVC member, I would highly recommend this cruise. If you ever get the opportunity to take a member cruise, do it! You will make a lifetime of memories.
